Case Number: 1609240082

Corpus Christi Police conducted a warrantless emergency detention on a 33-year-old man who threatened suicide and caused a store located at 5515 Staples Street to evacuate all the customers.

Corpus Christi Police received a couple calls from the 33-year-old man who cried out for help and threatened suicide. The man made no threats to others, but made it clear that he did not want to continue life. The man refused to provide his location to Police. A Corpus Christi Police Patrol Supervisor called the man and learned a description of the man and information that led the patrol supervisor to believe the man was a gun store located at 5515 Staples Street. The patrol supervisor requested all the customers and staff except the man meeting the description, evacuate from the store. Once the store employees and customers were out of the store and safe, the patrol supervisor called the suicidal man back and learned the man who remained in the store was in fact the same as the man who called Police earlier in the day.

The man in the store was alone and did have access to weapons which merited the Corpus Christi Police SWAT team and Negotiation Team to respond. Corpus Christi Police closed Staples from Williams Drive to Holly Drive to all traffic. The Negotiators established dialogue with the 33-year-old man and after two hours of speaking with the 33-year-old man, he came out of the store and surrendered without any injuries at 7:40pm.

The 33-year-old man was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation and to introduce him to resources to provide him help. No injuries or  property damage was reported.
