3rd WEST NILE MOSQUITO POSITIVE TRAP TEST FOR 5900 COLORADO

 

The Corpus Christi Animal Control and Vector Services received a confirmation of West Nile virus in a mosquito in the 5900 block of Colorado St. from a test that was submitted August 2, 2016.

Vector Services has implemented the Mosquito Management Response Plan to this detection. The response entails the following:

  1. The spraying of a 1/2 mile radius around the area of the detection for three   consecutive nights beginning tonight.
  2. Police Directed Patrol Officers and Neighborhood Services personnel will be attempting to locate any standing water in the affected neighborhood including examining abandoned properties.
  3. Vector Services will conduct continuing surveillance of mosquito traps in the immediate area for signs of the Culex species of mosquito responsible for West Nile virus.

The need to spray a larger area is not necessary based on the entomology of the Culex species mosquito and the normal travel distance of this mosquito. Vector Control will be conducting the aerial spray in the evening, and at dusk, since that is the time the Culex is most active. Residents are reminded to check their property for standing water and to avoid, if possible, outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, wear long sleeve shirts and long pants. Use appropriate mosquito repellent with DEET for themselves and their children. Please call 361-826-2489 if you wish to report abandoned property or high grass or standing water.

Detectives Want Public Help To Identify Woman Involved In Assault

Corpus Christi Police Detectives would like help from the public to identify and locate a woman involved in assaulting a 12-year-old girl at a store located at 1301 Airline Road on August 2nd.

A 34-year-old woman reported the assault at 9:53pm on August 2nd and explained to Officers that her 12-year-old daughter ran to her in the store and complained that she was hit in the face by an unknown woman in the store. The 34-year-old woman told Officers  while she was down an aisle, her 12-year-old daughter came ran to her holding her lip and then said that an unknown woman yelled at her for no reason. The 34-year-old woman told Officers that her daughter explained that when she attempted to run away from the unknown woman, the 12-year-old was grabbed her by the left arm and punched her on the left portion of her lip causing it to bleed. The 34-year-old woman told Officers that when she exited the store, the unknown woman was waiting for them in a green Dodge passenger car. The 34-year-old woman told Officers the woman yelled at her, then drove away.

Detectives have obtained video of the woman accused of the assault and would like the public to help identify and locate the woman.

Corpus Christi SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team responded to an apartment located in the 3600 block of Crestbrook Court after a man threaten to shoot responding Officers and then held his girlfriend against her will inside the home with him.

The 47-year-old mother to the suspect had originally called police after she and her son got into an argument over a cat.  When her son began to make threats to kill her, the mother left the apartment to call police.

Also in the apartment was the suspects 28-year-old girlfriend who later told Officers that when she also attempted to leave the apartment, her boyfriend refused to let her out, and assaulted her with his hands and fist.

The female was released without any serious injuries just prior to the SWAT and HNT units arriving on the scene, however the suspect stayed inside.

Those specialized units were used to talk the boyfriend, Blake Garcia (10/06/1988), into giving himself up a short time later.   He was arrested for assault, making terroristic threats and unlawful restraint, all misdemeanor offenses.

A cashier called Corpus Christi Police after a couple went into the video store, located at 7430 Interstate 37 Access Road North, and used fake money to purchase items.

The cashier told Officers that a middle aged white male and female walked into the store and purchased merchandise and used a counterfeit $100 bill to pay. The cashier did not initially realize that the bill was fake and it was only after the couple left the store that he took a closer look at the money and could tell it was fake.

Officers hope video surveillance from the stores camera system will help them identify the male suspect who passed the counterfeit bill, however, at this time no suspects have been identified.

Crash Caused Causeway to Close For an Hour Today

Corpus Christi Police responded to the 13900 block of Park Road 22 at 10:34am to a city vehicle crash with downed lines that crossed the roadway. The lines extended across all four lanes of PR22.  Several units from the Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section responded to assist. Investigation revealed that the city unit had an arm lift that was extended up. It was extended up because there was a generator on the back of the open bed preventing the arm to properly be set in place. As the city unit traveled west, it brought down what was later identified as a cable line. AEP was on scene with Grande who had trouble with the line.  AEP was credited as a huge help with this incident.  The Utilities supervisor was present. Both east and westbound traffic was at a stand still for about an hour before the roadway was opened to normal use.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a man after he threatened to harm members of his family with a hammer inside a home they share in the 2800 block of Mary Street.

Officers arrived to find the man standing over his 32-year-old common law spouse in a back bedroom of the house.  The female had the couples infant child in her arms at the time.

Officers were able to talk the man, Cesar Espinosa (04/11/1986), into dropping the hammer and he was arrested.

Inside the home, Officers located several areas where the man had used the hammer to hit the walls.  Also inside were three other children ages 8, 13 and 14.

No one was injured.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a female driver for DWI after she crashed her car into another vehicle on Interstate 37 and then tried to flee the scene.

The crash investigation determined that a 51-year-old man was driving his 2014 Nissan Versa north on Interstate 37 near Suntide Road when the driver of a 2009 Nissan Sentra sedan hit him from behind.

No one in either vehicle was injured.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra then attempted to drive her car away from the scene.  Officers located her car, abandoned under the Clarkwood Road overpass.  They also found the female driver, Cassie Riddle (12/01/1984) attempting to walk away from the disabled car.

After an investigation, Officers determined that the female was intoxicated.  She was arrested for driving while intoxicated and fail to remain at a crash scene, a Class C Misdemeanor.

Crime Stoppers Tip Leads Investigators to Arrest For Flour Bluff Fatal Hit and Run

Corpus Christi Police arrested 27-year-old Nicholas Brenz (12/11/1988) Friday afternoon based on a tip to Crime Stoppers for a hit and run crash that happened Wednesday night on Flour Bluff Drive which killed a 35-year-old woman.

A 35-year-old female was with her friends on August 3rd when they stopped on Don Patricio to pick up items which were mistakenly left on the top of the car and had fallen to the road. A truck, that was traveling north, struck the 35-year-old woman and threw the 35-year-old woman into the south bound lanes where she was then run over by at least two more vehicles. The truck did not remain and fled the scene. The 35-year-old woman did not survive the crash.

This is the 15th traffic fatality for 2016 in Corpus Christi.

A tip from Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers led investigators to discover the truck at about 12:30pm Friday on the 400 block of Polaris Drive in Flour Bluff. Investigators learned that the owner of the truck was not a resident of the home on Polaris, but shortly after the truck was discovered, Nicholas Brenz walked to the Flour Bluff Police Sub-station and surrendered to Officers. Investigators interviewed Brenz and then obtained a warrant for the arrest of Brenz for Accident Involving Injury or Death with a bond amount of $150,000.

This is the 48th tip to Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers which has led to an arrest in 2016.

Investigators are thankful to the Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers community for the help to discover the primary vehicle responsible for this crash. Investigators continue to search for additional vehicles and drivers involved in the crash, but say there is no interest to pursue any more criminal accusations in this case. The Investigators say they want to close out the case and want anyone involved to feel comfortable with coming forward to provide information.

Corpus Christi Police are investigating a hit and run crash that left a pedestrian with injuries.

A 31-year-old female witness called Officers after she found a man lying face up on the exit ramp to Saratoga Boulevard from State Highway 286.  The man was bleeding from injuries to his head, and he had abrasions to his torso and legs. He also had had a tire mark on his shirt and appeared to have been struck by a vehicle.

The 20-year-old man was transported by CCFD EMS to Spohn Memorial Hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening.

At this time no suspect vehicle information is available and no suspect driver has been identified.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a male driver after he got into a fight with a pedestrian that was crossing the 5600 block of Williams Drive with his family.

Officers arrived at the intersection of South Staples Street and Williams Drive after several people passing by saw two men fighting on the side of the road.  Once Officers broke up the men, they determined that a 29-year-old man was crossing the street with his two children when a truck traveling at a high rate of speed approached them and the driver began yelling at the family to get out of the road. The driver stopped his truck in the street and he kept yelling.  He then drove into a parking lot, got out and then ran toward the pedestrian and hit him in the face.

Neither the pedestrian not his children were seriously injured.

After an investigation, Officers did determine that the driver of the 2001 Ford F150 truck, Travis “Tommy” Crawford Jr. (03/26/1972) was intoxicated.  He was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated due to prior convictions. He could also face charges of misdemeanor assault for hitting the pedestrian in the face.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a female driver for DWI after she was stopped for a traffic violation in the 14000 block of Whitecap Boulevard.

Officers stopped the 2010 Toyota sedan for having only one headlight working and an expired vehicle registration.

After an investigation it was determined that the driver, Abby Vanderbilt (05/26/1981), was intoxicated.  She was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated when Officers discovered her infant daughter, her 5-year-old stepson and her 13-year-old daughter were all in the car with her.

The three children were released to their step-father and her vehicle was impounded.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a man after he exposed himself to two females working in an office in the 5900 block of Ayers Street.

The two females saw the man sitting on a bench outside the office with the front part of his shorts pulled down exposing himself.  They called police and watched as the man went inside a nearby trailer.

Officers arrived in time to arrest the man, Daniel Martinez (12/31/1988), for indecent exposure.  He was additionally charged with two outstanding Municipal Court warrants that had been issued for him.

The owner of a motel was assaulted by a guest that he was trying to remove at a motel located at 202 Kleberg Place.

The 55-year-old motel owner told Officers that he went to evict the guest after he did damaged to one of the rooms.  The guest pushed the motel owner down when he entered his room, and then threatened to stab him with a screwdriver. The guest then put a chair up against the motel door so the owner could not get out of the room.

Several witnesses passing by helped the motel owner escape the room.  They all went to the motel office and called the police.

Officers arrived in time to arrest the motel guest, Irving Kinler (12/26/1942), for aggravated assault.

The motel owner did not suffer any serious injuries.

Corpus Christi Police believe a man operating a golf cart in the 4600 block of Wood River Drive was intoxicated when he crashed it into a truck.

A crash investigation determined that a 56-year-old man was operating his golf cart when he ran the stop sign at the Red River Drive and Wood River Drive intersection and rolled into the path of a Chevrolet Z-71 truck driven by a 27-year-old man.

The impact of the crash knocked the golf cart driver from the seat and he was run over by the truck. The truck driver stopped and he along with several other witnesses began to render aid to the man.  The driver of the golf cart got back on his cart and fled the scene, driving to his home located in the 4200 block of Big Cypress Bayou.

Officers and CCFD EMS arrived at the home and transported the man to Spohn Memorial Hospital to be treated for severe injuries to his arms and legs.

During an investigation, Officers determined that the driver of the golf cart was intoxicated.  If a blood test confirms this, he will be charged with driving while intoxicated.  He was not arrested because of his injuries.

Offense: Possession of a Controlled Substance
The Corpus Christi Police Department Narcotics Vice Investigations Division executed a search warrant on August 3 at a home located at 1906 Van Loan Street. The warrant was the result of a month long undercover investigation into drug trafficking from this address.

The Corpus Christi Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit assisted in the execution of the warrant that resulted in two arrests and the seizure of marijuana and synthetic marijuana.

Freddie Major, (09/02/1971), was arrested after he was detained inside the residence during the execution of the warrant and found to be wanted on a warrant out of Nueces County for Evading Detention.

A second male was arrested after he fled out of the back of the residence as officers made entry. He was identified as Ivy Callandret, (03/02/1982), and charged with Evading Arrest, Possession of Controlled Substance in PG2A, and two outstanding arrest warrant out of Nueces County for a Probation Violation and a Motion to Revoke Probation.

The search warrant resulted in the seizure of 16gr of marijuana and 31.65gr of synthetic marijuana.

City Hosts Vehicle Auction Saturday August 6, 2016

The City of Corpus Christi will auction 106 cars, trucks, and motorcycles at the Police Vehicle Impound Lot, located at 5485 Greenwood Drive, on Saturday, August 6, 2016. The auction will start at 10:00 am.

The general public is encouraged to register and view the vehicles for auction from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Friday, August 5, 2016. The general public can continue to view the vehicles from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on the day of the auction.

The vehicles for auction may be viewed online and an auction list may be downloaded from www.siskauction.com.
