Auto Theft Task Force Wants Help From Public To Catch Burglars

The Corpus Christi Police Auto Theft Task Force would like help from the public to identify and locate two men who are accused of breaking into a trailer on August 14th and causing property damage at a business located at 2501 South Padre Island Drive.

A 35-year-old man reported the burglary on August 15th and told Officers there was video evidence that showed two men enter the business property after the business was closed for the day, and the two men broke into a trailer. The 35-year-old man told Officers the trailer was empty and the men took a generator that was left in the fenced area with the trailer. The 35-year-old man told Officers once the two men went back to their vehicle, one of the men picked up a rock and threw the rock into a window of the business. The 35-year-old man told Officers the rock broke the window and it appears the man only threw the rock to cause damage.

Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers has a cash reward for the first person to call 888-TIPS and provides information to lead law enforcement to locate 33-year-old Elisa Rangel (10/18/1992). Rangel is a fugitive wanted out of Nueces County for fraudulent use of identifying information, a state jail felony offense.

Rangel is described as a 33-year-old woman who stands 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 155 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes. Rangel has a tattoo of a ribbon and praying hands on her neck, a tattoo of a rosary and a bible on her back, and a tattoo on her right leg that reads, “Isabel.” The last known address for Rangel was on the 1400 block of 19th Street in Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi Police arrested a male driver for DWI after he crashed his car into a utility pole in the 7300 block of South Staples Street.

The crash investigation determined that the driver of a 2007 Toyota Camry was traveling north on South Staples Street near Yorktown Road when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the light pole belonging to AEP.  The crash caused the pole and wires to come down onto the roadway.

The driver, Luis Alert Guerrero (05/17/1981), was not injured.

After an investigation, Officers did determine that the driver was intoxicated.  He was arrested for driving while intoxicated.  The charges were upgraded to a Class A Misdemeanor due to prior convictions.

A children’s party at a business turned violent when the ex-boyfriend of a 26-year women showed up there threatening the female and her new boyfriend.

Officers responded to the business, located at 5118 South Staples Street, and found a 26-year-old man bleeding from his head. He told Officers that he was at a children’s party inside when he walked out with his girlfriend.

When they got outside, an ex-boyfriend of the woman showed up and started an argument with the two.  During the disturbance the ex-boyfriend pulled out a handgun and chambered a round. He then put the gun back into his pants pocket and started to hit them with his fist. The couple were both hit in the head and face multiple times causing a cut to the man’s head.

The ex-boyfriend continued to hit the couple until several bystanders broke up the fight.

The ex-boyfriend was last seen leaving in his black Nissan Altima.

The woman was able to give Officers the ex-boyfriends name, however, he was not located.

The couple did not require medical attention.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the abdomen after a large fight at a business located at 5815 Weber Road.

Officers arrived at the bar after several people had already left.  They were told that an argument over a pool game caused a fight inside. While everyone was leaving, another disturbance started in the parking lot and several witnesses told Officers they heard a single shot fired from a gun.

While Officers were investigating this report, they were informed that a 26-year-old man had walked into the emergency room at Bay Area Hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower right abdomen.

The victim, who’s injuries are not considered to be life threatening, gave Officers limited information regarding the fight.

At this time, no suspect has been arrested.

Corpus Christi Police Remember Officer John Sartain

The Corpus Christi Police Department remembers Patrol Officer John William Sartain who was shot and killed by a sniper on August 20, 1971 at 11pm.

Officer Sartain walked to his patrol unit to begin his shift with partner, Gilbert Lazo. A 16 year old sniper shot Officer Sartain in the head from an apartment 200 yards away. Officer Sartain was 22 years of age and is survived by a wife and daughter.

The sniper pled not guilty to the charges and was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in 1971. He was later paroled in 1984.

Corpus Christi’s founder, Henry L. Kinney, named many of the city streets after nature, including one of the city’s original streets; Laguna St. Laguna St. was renamed in 1991 as John Sartain St.

Corpus Christi Chief of Police, Mike Markle announced today there will be five Officers promoted in rank in a ceremony scheduled for Friday, August 26, 2016 at Police Headquarters.

Garza has two felony warrants for his arrest for Burglary of a Habitation and Theft of a Firearm. Garza is described as a white male who stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, 185 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Garza has a tattoo on his left wrist that reads, “Sariah Ariel Garza” and has a tattoo on his right forearm of praying hands and reads, “Only God Can Judge Me.”

Garza was featured on the KZTV “Wheel of Shame” on August 10th and a Crime Stoppers tip led law enforcement to the 800 block of Elizabeth where Garza fled from Officers. Officers ask the public for more information to capture Garza.

A 36-year-old male victim called Corpus Christi Police after he was stabbed in the arm by another man while walking in the 600 block of McBride Lane.

The victim stated to officers that he was walking on McBride Lane when another man began to argue with him.  During the disturbance the suspect pulled out a box cutter and stabbed the victim in his right arm and then left.

The victim was transported by CCFD EMS to Spohn Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was described as being a Hispanic male, bald with tattoos covering his head and he was last seen wearing a black shirt and green shorts.  He was not located by Officers.

Neighbors called Corpus Christi Police after they heard a female screaming for help inside an apartment located at 3720 Brookside Drive.

When Officers arrived, they could also hear a female crying loudly inside the apartment.  When no one opened the door for Officers when they knocked, they forced their way in and found the female inside with her common law spouse.

The female had been assaulted and was bleeding from her mouth.  CCFD EMS arrived to treat the female, but she refused to be transported.

The male, Rodrigo Rodriguez (01/08/1985), was arrested for assault.

The manager of a business, located at 14241 Northwest Boulevard, called Corpus Christi Police after he found several travel trailers parked on his lot had been broken into.

The manager told Officers that he found seven separate travel trailers stored on his lot that had the door windows broken out of them.  It is unknown if anything from inside the trailers was stolen.

It was estimated that the damage done to all the trailers was over $700.

At this time, no suspects have been identified.

The Rain Was Nice But Let’s Work To Prevent Mosquitoes Now

Mosquito Control Around the Home

The most important thing citizens can do to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile virus is to eliminate mosquito-breeding areas around the home and limit exposure to feeding mosquitoes. Many female mosquitoes can lay 100-300 eggs on the surface of fresh or stagnant water every third night during its life span. Here are some simple things citizens can do to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites around the home:

  • Do not allow water to accumulate in the saucers of flowerpots, cemetery urns, or in pet dishes for more than two days.
  • Get rid of tin cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools, or other containers that collect and hold water.
  • Clean debris from rain gutters, remove standing water from flat roofs, and repair leaks around faucets and air conditioners.
  • Change the water in birdbaths and wading pools at least once a week.
  • Fill or drain puddles, ditches and swampy areas.
  • Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps used to cover boats or pools, and arrange the tarp to drain the water.

WEST NILE MOSQUITO POSITIVE TRAP TESTS AT 400 BARTLETT, 5900 COLORADO AND 2800 DEMPSEY

The Corpus Christi Animal Control and Vector Services received a confirmation of West Nile virus in a mosquito in the 400 Block Bartlett, 5900 Colorado, and 2800 Dempsey from traps that were submitted August 9, 2016. A total of three detections, all repeat areas.

Vector Services has implemented the Mosquito Management Response Plan to this detection. The response entails the following:

  1. The spraying of a 1/2 mile radius around the area of the detection for three consecutive nights beginning tonight, weather permitting.
  2. Police Directed Patrol Officers and Neighborhood Services personnel will be attempting to locate any standing water in the affected neighborhood including examining abandoned properties.
  3. Vector Services will conduct continuing surveillance of mosquito traps in the immediate area for signs of the Culex species of mosquito responsible for West Nile virus.

The need to spray a larger area is not necessary based on the entomology of the Culex species mosquito and the normal travel distance of this mosquito. Vector Control will be conducting the aerial spray in the evening, and at dusk, since that is the time the Culex is most active.  Residents are reminded to check their property for standing water and to avoid, if possible, outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, wear long sleeve shirts and long pants. Use appropriate mosquito repellent with DEET for themselves and their children. Please call 361-826-2489 if you wish to report abandoned property or high grass or standing water.

A fan was arrested by Corpus Christi Police after he attempted to jump into the ring during a WWE event at the American Bank Center, located at 1901 North Shoreline Boulevard.

A security guard told Officers that during a live taping of WWE a male fan jumped a gated area that was next to the stage and tried to run into the ring. The security guard attempted to detain the fan but he resisted causing the two to fall to the ground.

The 54-year-old security guard was bitten on his forearm by the fan, but did not require medical attention.

Officers arrested the fan, Edward Ferrero (05/05/1993), for assault and criminal trespass.

A portion of a bar inside a nightclub, located at 5922 South Staples Street, was set on fire causing damage inside.

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to the report of a burglary alarm at the club and when they arrived they found several small flames inside the building on the bar top near the patio exit. The Officers were able to make entry through a partially opened rear door and extinguish most of the blaze.  CCFD responded to make sure that the fire was completely out and the damage was minimal.

At this time, it is unknown if anything was stolen from the nightclub.

A 17-year-old male victim called Corpus Christi Police after he was assaulted and had his phone taken by several suspects outside of an apartment located in the 2800 block of Enterprise Court.

The victim told Officers that he was invited inside an apartment earlier in the day and while he was there he was asked to step outside.  When he did, several males began to assault him. The victim said he was knocked unconscious after being hit in the head and his LG cell phone was stolen.

Officers observed the victim to have swelling to the right side of his face and several scrapes and cuts to his head. He was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS for injuries not believed to be life threatening.

The victim was able to provide Officers with the name of a suspect that he thinks was involved, however that man was not located.
