Robbery This Morning Similar To A Crime Trend From Last Year

A restaurant employee was robbed at about 09:45 this morning as she walked into her place of employment in the 6500 block of South Staples. She had just arrived at the restaurant after coming directly from a bank.   It appears that she was followed from that bank and then robbed in a manner consistent with a type of street crime known as “jugging”.

The Offenders in this mornings crime were described as three young black males. The suspect vehicle was described as an older model silver or gray four door car.

Corpus Christi was targeted for this type of crime early last year and the department responded with a massive public information effort, enhanced bank patrols, and undercover special assignments. Some of the offenders were identified and it was confirmed that they were part a well-organized street crimes gang from Houston.

All citizens, especially business employees, are once again asked to be very aware and vigilant when leaving the bank after any transaction.   It appears that the preferred method of the criminal is to follow the person from the bank and then take the money from a vehicle if the money is left in an unattended vehicle.   These types of criminals will also approach people to forcibly take the money if it was not left in the vehicle.

Police Remember Joseph Moon

The Corpus Christi Police Department remember fallen officer Joseph Moon today.

Tuesday, June 7, 1938, Corpus Christi Police Patrolman Joseph Moon died as a result of a crash while in pursuit of a speeding motorist on Timon Boulevard.

Joseph Moon was a motorcycle traffic officer and had been employed by the Corpus Christi Police for one year. The rear brakes for the motorcycle jammed as Officer Moon attempted to slow to turn onto Market Street. The motorcycle struck a concrete curb and Officer Moon suffered abdominal injuries from the handlebars.

Officer Moon underwent surgery, but died of his injuries on June 10, 1938. Officer Moon was survived by his wife and two children.

Narcotics Officers Seize $17,000 Worth of Synthetic Marijuana At Hotel Thursday

The Corpus Christi Police Narcotics and Vice Investigators seized 427 bags of synthetic cannabinoid packaged for street-level sales from a hotel room Thursday morning.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Room 226 at the Red Roof Inn at 6805 South Padre Island Drive after an investigation started the previous evening into drug dealing going on from that hotel room.
Upon service of the search warrant, the following subjects were arrested:

Trevino, Robert (4-11-94), outstanding Refugio County SO warrant for Possession of Dangerous Drugs, 1F enhanced Man/Del of Controlled Substance PG 2/2A >=400g, Possession of Controlled Substance PG 2A, Possession of Marijuana <2oz.

Gonzalez, Carlo Alfonso (3-26-96), 1F enhanced Man/Del of Controlled Substance PG 2/2A >=400g, Possession of Controlled Substance PG 2A, Possession of Marijuana <2oz.

Gomez, Domynick Gary-Anthony (3-5-84), 1F enhanced Man/Del of Controlled Substance PG 2/2A >=400g, Possession of Controlled Substance PG 2A, Possession of Marijuana <2oz.

Investigators seized 427 bags of synthetic cannabinoid packaged for street-level sales, totaling an approximate net weight of 4.27 kilograms.  There was also 3.1 grams of marijuana seized in the room.  Investigators seized over $4550.00 in US Currency as well as a Subaru Forester.  The estimated value of the drugs seized was over $17,000.00 dollars.

Police Investigate Bank Robbery on Staples Street Thursday Afternoon

Corpus Christi Police responded to a complaint of a bank robbery at 5444 Staples Street Thursday afternoon.

Responding Officers learned that two men went to the Members First Federal Credit Union at 1:45pm and took money by force from the bank tellers. One man went into the lobby to approach the tellers while the second man stood at the door. The man who went into the lobby wore red shorts, a gray long sleeve hoodie shirt, gloves and a white mask. The man in the red shorts approached each of the tellers of the bank, displayed a handgun, and demanded money from the till. The second man wore a mask and gloves and stood watch at the door. The tellers gave money in a bag to the man in the red shorts and the two men left the bank and ran south toward Tanglewood Drive where they may have gotten into a maroon pickup truck.

There was one customer in the bank at the time of the robbery. No injuries were reported. The Corpus Christi Robbery/Homicide Detectives, forensics services, and federal investigators arrived at the scene to gather information and evidence.

Suspicious Death-Body Found near Peary Place

A deceased female was found last night near the 1900 block of Gaslight at about 11 p.m. Investigators are working to identify the female and determine the cause of her death.  This area is near the Peary Place Neighborhood and the Cayo Del Oso.  This case is in the early stages of the investigation and we have no further information to release at this time.

Crime Stoppers Celebrates 35 Years In Texas

Texas Crime Stoppers 35th AnniversaryCrime Stoppers celebrates 35 years of operation in Texas today after its start on June 8, 1981. Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers formed its own group on October 28, 1981.

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization certified by the Governor’s office and widely supported by funding from donations and supported by the local media. It consists of a dedicated, non-paid volunteer board working with a Corpus Christi Police Coordinator who act as liaisons between the Board, the Police Department, other law enforcement agencies and the media. Crime Stoppers provides an avenue for the citizens of Corpus Christi to report crimes anonymously through the use of a hotline and pays rewards to anonymous tipsters.

Crime Stoppers began after a university student was killed during a gas station robbery in July, 1976 in Albuquerque New Mexico. After six weeks of investigation the police had very few leads as to who was responsible. Albuquerque Police Detective, Greg MacAleese, thought that if the public was able to observe a reenactment of the crime on television this may lead to a citizen providing information that may lead to an arrest. Greg MacAleese was right. A caller contacted the police department the next day after seeing the reenactment. The tip information was enough to lead the police to the two men who were responsible. Within seventy two hours of the reenactment being aired, the police had solved the murder. This was the beginning of Crime Stoppers.

Crime Stoppers spread to Texas on June 8, 1981, and then reached Corpus Christi which started its own non-profit group on October 28 of the same year.

Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers approved $45,930 dollars in rewards for solutions to 114 crimes in Corpus Christi in 2015. Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers has approved $19,910 dollars in rewards for the solutions to 36 crimes in Corpus Christi in 2016 as of June 8, 2016.

Traffic Safety Section Investigates Pedestrian Crash on Staples

Incident: Vehicle Crash with a Pedestrian

Corpus Christi Police responded to a major vehicle crash that involved a pedestrian on the 5800 block of Staples Street Tuesday night.  Officers learned that an unidentified woman walked across Staples at about 9:30pm from the Country Village shopping area towards Burnham.  Witnesses told Officers that the woman did not react to the horns honking in efforts to alert her as she was in the street.  A 37-year-old man drove a full size pickup with a heavy brush guard which struck the woman.  Officers observed no indication of impairment with the 37-year-old man, and he was released at the scene.  At the time of this report, the woman is in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.  No citations or criminal charges have been applied in this crash.
