Corpus Christi Police Address Vehicles For Hire Concern

The Corpus Christi Police Department been made aware of a new type of vehicle-for-hire service entering our city in the form of ridesharing and would like to address some potential safety concerns.

The City of Corpus Christi regulates vehicles-for-hire to ensure that companies conform to industry standards to include drivers’ criminal backgrounds are thoroughly checked, vehicles are inspected for safety, and the proper amount and type of insurance is being utilized.

The Corpus Christi Police Department will give drivers of alternative ride sharing companies a one month period, ending June 10, to come into compliance with the existing vehicle for hire ordinance. After June 10th, operators of non-permitted vehicles-for-hire will be cited for violations of the vehicle-for-hire ordinance with fines up to $500 per offense.

The Corpus Christi Police Department takes it’s obligation to public safety serious and would like to remind everyone to have the following considerations when selecting a vehicle for hire service:
• Has the operator passed a thorough background check?
• Has the vehicle been properly inspected and have proper insurance;
• Has the driver been approved to be an operator of a vehicle for hire in Corpus Christi?

The vehicle for hire ordinance is in place for public safety. Please consider the previous information when making a decision to use a ridesharing service.
