The Oso Bridge on the 8800 block of South Padre Island Drive was closed for several hours Monday night while the Corpus Christi Police Department worked a major vehicle crash with multiple fatal injuries.
Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to the crash at 9:15pm and found several vehicles obstructing traffic on the westbound lanes of the bridge. The westbound lanes of traffic were closed to traffic and the eastbound lanes were reduced to one lane of travel because debris spread on both sides of the freeway.
Emergency Crews discovered a 27-year-old man and a 20-year-old man did not survive the crash. Several other people were taken to the hospital by ambulance to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section evaluated the scene to take measurements and determine the sequence of events. The crash involved a gold 2000 Chevy 1500 truck, a white 2012 Chevy 3500 four door truck, a red 2004 Isuzu Rodeo carry-all, and a green 2001 Volvo S80.
The Oso Bridge was closed completely at 12:13am so that the Traffic Safety Section could safely evaluate and measure the crash scene. The roadway was re-opened to normal use at 2:34am.
No conclusions about the cause of the crash have yet been determined, but speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. Crash Investigators also believe alcohol was involved and continue to investigate any possible application of criminal charges related to this vehicle crash.
