The Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament held August 3 & 4 at Marker 37 will provide cash prizes for the heaviest trout, redfish, and black drum harvested on the day of the tournament.
The tournament meet and greet is scheduled for August 3, 2012 at 5pm and will have live music, a silent auction, door prizes, food and drinks. The tournament will be August 4 from 6am until 3:30pm and cost $75 for a late entry fee or $10 per person to enjoy the event without fishing.
The CCLEFT is an IRS recognized 501 c (3) organization. The tournament has two main goals: an entertaining weekend for Public Safety personnel & their supporters and fund-raising for local non-profits with an emphasis on crime reduction and youth.
Over the years, CCLEFT has given over $40,000 to numerous local charities including, The Fraternal Order of Police “Shop with a Cop” program, The Corpus Christi Police Officers Association “St. Michaels Fund”, Police Athletic League and The Corpus Christi Police Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament Scholarship Fund at Del Mar College. Corpus Christi Police Investigators are evaluating burnt property on the 700 block of South Port Avenue that is suspected to have been the result of arson.
Corpus Christi Police were called to Irma’s Lounge located at 703 South Port Avenue for a building that was on fire. The building was boarded and unoccupied and was consumed by fire.
Witnesses told police officers that a man who wore blue jeans and a gray shirt ran east from the fire. Police Investigators seek any additional information the public may have about this fire.
Police were called to the 900 block of Duncan Street at 6:20am for a fire in a vacant lot. A piece of furniture was on fire and located near to the original fire at the 900 block of South Port Avenue.

A Corpus Christi Police Patrol car was struck by a vehicle on the 5000 block of Holly Road while on a traffic stop.
A Corpus Christi Police Officer initiated a traffic stop of a black 2008 BMW at the 5000 block of Holly Road. The operator of that BMW, 26-year-old Alex Hernandez (9/12/1985) was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The 26-year-old passenger of the BMW, Francisco Leal (10/10/1985) was arrested for public intoxication.
Leal and Hernandez were transported to the city detention center. Another Corpus Christi Police Officer stayed with the BMW to wait for the tow truck to collect the BMW to take to the city impound lot.
A black 2006 Dodge Charger operated by 31-year-old Guadalupe Maravilla (8/9/1980) crashed into the police patrol car and the BMW. The police officer and Maravilla were not injured in the crash. Maravilla was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and then delivered to the city detention center for driving while intoxicated.
The Corpus Christi Police Department reminds motorists that the Texas Transportation Code section 545.157 requires drivers in Texas to slow down or move over when they see the flashing lights of a stopped emergency vehicle. Unless otherwise directed by a police officer, you must vacate the lane closest to the vehicle or slow down to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit in hopes of reducing the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths.
A 54-year-old man helped a police officer in a struggle with four people on the beach Wednesday night.
Corpus Christi Police Officer Eric Garza was dispatched to the area of Beach Marker 224 at 7:23pm for a reckless driver. Officer Garza saw a red 2000 Mitsubishi Montero sport utility vehicle doing donuts on the beach and initiated a traffic stop. The operator of the vehicle, 19-year-old Kyle Fisk (7/13/1993) displayed aggressive behavior toward Officer Garza. Officer Garza demanded Fisk exit the vehicle. Fisk exited the vehicle then fought with Officer Garza to prevent the application of handcuffs.
The three other occupants of the vehicle then got out of the vehicle and then interfered with the arrest while Officer Garza and Fisk fought in the sand.
A 54-year-old man saw the struggle and stopped to help Officer Garza.
Other Police Officers arrived and arrested: 18-year-old Christian Rodriguez (2/26/1994) for interfering with public duties; 19-year-old Caitlin Fisher (8/3/1992) for assault by contact and interfering with public duties; and 19-year-old Joseph Mitchell (12/25/1992) for interfering with public duties. Fisk was arrested for reckless driving and resisting arrest and the red Montero was impounded.
Corpus Christi Police Property Crimes Detectives are asking the public’s assistance in identifying a White male who shoplifted a 46” television from the Wal-Mart located at 1250 Flour Bluff Drive. The man was seen pushing a shopping cart with the television on top of it out of the store.
Loss Prevention Officers reported to Police the man failed to pay for the television and fled. Wal-Mart employees searched for the television and found it thrown in a nearby wooded area. The television valued at $900 was recovered, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

Senior Officer Emily Perez, Lieutenant Phillip Bintliff, and Officer Brenda Garza were recognized Wednesday for outstanding performance
Three Corpus Christi Police Officers were recognized for outstanding performance by Police Chief, Floyd Simpson, Wednesday morning.
Officer Brenda Garza and Senior Officer Emily Perez each received a Certificate of Merit from Chief Simpson for their participation and organization of the event called, “Operation: Safe Return” which was considered action above and beyond the normal expectation of police duty. Officers Garza and Perez worked with their fellow directed patrol officers from July 3 to July 24 to bring Operation Safe Return to the Northwest region of our city. With great enthusiasm, dedication, and professionalism, these officers garnered the support and partnership of a multitude of services, businesses, schools, and community stakeholders, to engage young residents and family members in safety and health related activities in a unique and engaging venue at West Guth Park. Over 750 students and 400 adults interacted with police officers, physicians, and the City’s Park and Recreation team, to name a few, and learned about burglary prevention, anti-bullying tactics, nutrition, and more while receiving free physicals, vision screening, and school supplies.
The exemplary performance of these officers reflects favorable on the Department and the City of Corpus Christi.
Corpus Christi Police Lieutenant Phillip Bintliff was awarded his third life saving award Wednesday from Chief Simpson.
Lieutenant Bintliff is a police patrol supervisor and while on patrol last Sunday, July 29, Lieutenant Phillip Bintiff heard a call dispatched for a 7 month old baby who was unconscious. Lt. Bintliff responded to the residence and found the family trying desperately to give air to their baby. The baby boy has a tracheotomy and was not breathing and unresponsive.
According to the parents, Lt. Bintliff took charge. He directed each of them to a task while he started infant compressions. Lt. Bintliff told the father to go outside and flag down the ambulance. Lt. Bintliff directed the home nurse to clear the baby’s airway and then told the mother to operate the heart monitor.
The baby’s pulse monitor indicated no pulse. Lt. Bintliff said he refused to give up and performed chest compressions on the baby. About 2 minutes later the baby resuscitated and began to cry. Baby O was taken to the hospital for observation and returned home a happy baby boy with parents thankful to Lt. Bintliff.
Lieutenant Bintliff is known throughout the police department for his humble manner. Lieutenant Bintliff is a 42-year-old father of four daughters and has been employed with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 12 years as a graduate of the 59th Police Academy class.
Lt. Bintliff shared the credit for his action and said this department is full of good quality employees. Bintliff said any other officer in the same position would have responded in a similar manner. “By recognizing me,” Bintliff said to a reporter, “you’re recognizing everyone on the department.”

Police were dispatched to a local department store for a man exposing himself to customers. Upon their arrival, Officers contacted two shoppers who told them they were removing their children from their shopping carts when a blue Saturn drove up to them.
Inside in the car was a nude male who exposed himself to the women. The man drove off, but the women were able to provide Officers with the Saturn’s license plate.
Police were able to track the Saturn to the 6100 block of Boca Raton where they contacted the suspect. The suspect was identified and detectives with Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Bureau will continue with the investigation.

Officers were dispatched to 6300 Ocean Drive for a disturbance involving a weapon. Upon their arrival, Officers found the Texas A & M Police Department inspecting the damaged Naval Air Station gate. Witnesses told Officers they were fishing on Ocean Drive and bought shrimp from a young Hispanic male. The 19-year-old male also offered to sell the witnesses drugs and gave them his phone number should they change their minds.
The male left the area, but returned driving at a high rate of speed and colliding with the pipe barrier at the gate. The suspect then fled from the area. Officers tracked the phone number to the suspect’s grandmother who provided the suspect’s home address.
Officers found the suspect who appeared highly intoxicated at 1201 Woodlawn. The suspect was unable to keep steady standing up or sitting down, eventually slid off the stairway he was sitting on.
He was taken to Spohn South for a possible broken wrist by CCFD Emergency Personnel. A blood draw was taken and the driver hospitalized. The suspect is facing Driving While Intoxicated charges when released from the hospital. The Naval Air Station will conduct its investigation for the damaged gate.
The Corpus Christi Police Financial Crimes Investigators have received information from the Better Business Bureau to warn the public about an other scam. A circulation of new gift card scam emails use the BBB name. The following message is an announcement from the Better Business Bureau:
BBB joined Wal-Mart, Target and Best Buy as another established brand used to promote fake gift cards. Don’t bother trying to redeem this offer. It’s just a trick to get your email address, cell number and other personal information.
How the Scam Works:
People nationwide are receiving emails informing them that Better Business Bureau is giving away $1,000 Visa gift cards. Emails come from a variety of email addresses and contain different links, but all use a variation of the message below:

Go to the web address given in the email, and you will be asked to input information about your age, address, email and cell phone number. Given that the survey does not request your Social Security Number, banking information or ask you to download a maleware file, it is not likely an attempt at ID theft. Rather, it’s probably an unscrupulous way to collect consumer data, such as email addresses and phone numbers.

Officers were dispatched to Tompkins Court for a disturbance involving a Hispanic male in a white Dodge Caravan. Police arrived to find Lucas Silvas (09/16/74) in the van with a young child in the front passenger seat and a beer in the center console.
The driver was asked to turn the car off and exit the vehicle as they continued their investigation into the disturbance. Silvas refused and drove off with the 4-year-old unrestrained child. Officers report the child almost fell out of the open window. The Officer who was holding on to the door as Silvas began to drive away had to jump away from the vehicle as Lucas turned the vehicle in his direction.
Lucas sped off westbound on Tompkins and struck two parked vehicles. Officers were putting a B.O.L.O. (Be On the Look Out) for the Caravan when it was spotted traveling southbound on Ayers, speeding down the center lane as it passed several vehicles. The van continued on failing to stop for the red light at Ayers and Tarleton when Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over. The pursuit was canceled when the driver almost struck a vehicle as it turned east onto Horne Road.
Police following Silvas at a distance observed the driver pull into the driveway at 2910 Horne Road and attempt to run inside. Silvas was ordered to stop, but he kept yelling at Police to tase him. A struggle ensued in which Silvas took a swing at one of the Officers which missed. A lengthy struggle ensued as Officers tried to handcuff with Silvas knocking over patio furniture as he tried to get way.
Silvas who appeared to be intoxicated was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a Blood Draw taken. He was medically cleared and booked at the City Detention Center. Silvas was charged with Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Driving with Intoxicated with Child, Abandon/Endangering a Child, Evading on Foot, Resist Arrest, and an outstanding Municipal Court warrant for Failure to Appear with a $269 fine. He was also charged with Possession of Marijuana when a baggy containing Marijuana was found in his short pocket.
The four-year-old was uninjured and was released to a family member.
