Children Ages 3 and 4 Critically Injured In Crash With Driver Who Was Arrested For Intoxication Assault

A 22-year-old man was arrested Saturday for Intoxication Assault after a crash on the 16100 block of Park Road 22 on Padre Island sent several people including a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old child to the hospital.

The 22-year-old man, Eric Cordell (9/5/1989), drove a silver 2002 Nissan pickup on the 16100 block of Park Road 22 and turned into a white Sport Utility Vehicle causing a head on collision. The occupants of the white sport utility vehicle were trapped until they were freed by the Corpus Christi and the Flour Bluff Fire Departments.

Two HALO helicopters were employed to transport patients with critical injuries from the white sport utility vehicle to the hospital.

Corpus Christi Police discovered evidence that Cordell was intoxicated, and Cordell was arrested for Intoxication Assault, a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Cordell was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and then delivered to the city detention center.

21 Crashes In 8 Hours

The Corpus Christi Police Department investigated 21 vehicle crashes in 8 hours Friday from 7:00am until 3:00pm. This is a holiday weekend and there will be many travelers on the road. The Corpus Christi Police Department reminds everyone on the road to travel safely and follow a few simple tips:

  • Wear a seat belt
  • Use approved child safety restraints properly
  • Be patient and obey speed limits
  • Avoid in-car distractions
  • Don’t tailgate
  • And PLEASE do not drink and drive

The Police Department wants everyone to get to their destination safely.

Citizens Police Academy Alumni to hold Waffle Breakfast Fundraiser

The Corpus Christi Police Department Citizens Police Academy Alumni will hold a fundraising Waffle Breakfast Saturday, April 7th at the First Christian Church, 3401 Santa Fe Street from 8:00 to 11:00 AM.  For a $6.00 donation, diners will receive a large, fluffy waffle along with a serving of sausage and their choice of juice, milk or coffee.

Besides the delicious breakfast, the CPAA has a host of activities planned for young and old. There will be a silent auction; clowns will be on hand to entertain the youngsters; free children’s ID/fingerprinting will also be available; and members of the CCPD Auto Theft Task force will be on hand to provide free VIN etching.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to benefit the officers of the Corpus Christi Police Department.  Each year, the CPAA hosts several fundraisers designed to raise additional funds to purchase equipment not provided for in the Department’s budget.  In past years, the CPAA has donated digital cameras, voice recorders, rescue tools; flags for the CCPD Honor Guard, trauma kits, and other needed items.

Man Arrested After Stolen Vehicle Crashed At Weber And McArdle

A 15-year-old male and a 17-year-old man were apprehended by police Friday morning after a crash in a stolen vehicle.

Corpus Christi Police were called to the area of McArdle Road at Sandstone Drive at about 3:00am for a complaint that there was a man taking items out of vehicles without permission. A vehicle description was broadcast on the radio and patrol officers in the area located a vehicle with a similar description as was broadcast.

Officers attempted to investigate the gray 2008 Ford Escape and its occupants, but the vehicle accelerated from the officers. The officers observed items thrown from the vehicle which were later collected.

A police supervisor cancelled the attempt to catch up to the vehicle. Police Officers later discovered the vehicle was involved in a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Weber Road and McArdle Road. The operator of the vehicle, a 15-year-old male, was detained and taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The patrol officers discovered the vehicle was taken without permission so the juvenile was accused of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and delivered to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center.

The passenger in the vehicle, 17-year-old Michael Salinas (2/23/1995) was arrested for possession of marijuana and tampering with evidence. Possession of marijuana in this amount is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine. The tampering with evidence charge is a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Salinas was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and then delivered to the city detention center.

Police Search For Bank Robbery Suspect

Corpus Christi Police are looking for a man that robbed a bank at the 5200 block of South Padre Island Drive Thursday afternoon.

Corpus Christi Police were called to a bank at the 5200 block of S.P.I.D. at about 4:15 pm in reference to money that was taken by force from employees. Police were told there were no injuries and now the police are searching for a white male about 30 years of age that wore a blue and white plaid shirt with blue jeans and had a stubble beard.

CCPD Investigating Possible Threats

An 18 year-old woman told police that at approximately 1:30 PM Wednesday she received a text message from a friend warning her of possible threats made by unknown suspects against attendees at a protest earlier in the day in the 2500 block of Waldron Road.  According to the woman, her friend sent her a text that stated that the girlfriend of the friend’s cousin reportedly overheard a conversation that suspects unknown were threatening to shoot anyone who attended an afternoon protest.  The woman was unable to provide the officer with the name of the girlfriend whom allegedly overheard the conversation.  It is unknown at this point whether the conversation was between the suspects, or simply two individuals engaging in gossip.  The Criminal Investigation Division is investigating.

Woman Captured For Child Endangerment

Katherine Gaynor (4/7/1989) was arrested at the Corpus Christi Police Department April 4, 2012 by Corpus Christi Police detectives that investigated the case of child endangerment for her two-year old son.

                Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to information that a child may be in neglect at the 1400 block of Paige on April 3, 2012. The Patrol Officers were familiar with the address for previous calls for service. The officers discovered a two-year old child was outside the apartment unsupervised and in a dangerous condition. The officers located the mother and discovered the interior of the apartment was a hazardous condition for any child. Other violations revealed in the investigation so the officers contacted Child Protective Services to respond and evaluate the circumstance.

The mother, 22-year-old Katherine Gaynor, was placed under arrest, but allowed to gather a car seat and other items for the child. Seventeen year old Deonte Jones (12/14/1994) had arrived to assist and held the child while the mother gathered the necessary items. Jones caused a distraction for the officers and got between Gaynor and the officers which allowed Gaynor to escape through a window and flee. The child was placed in the custody of the Child Protective Services.

Gaynor is charged with Child Endangerment, a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

 

26 Year Old Man Seriously Injured After A Vehicle Crash On Weber

A 26-year-old man was hospitalized as a result of a crash at the intersection of Weber and McArdle Thursday morning.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer saw a silver 2011 Chevy Malibu travel north on Weber from Holly at a high rate of speed. The officer was outside of the patrol car when his attention was attracted to the Malibu because the horn sounded, and the tires squealed. The officer attempted to catch up to the Malibu and saw the Malibu attempt to turn left to travel west on McArdle, and the Malibu crashed.

The 26-year-old operator of the Malibu did not wear a seat belt and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 26-year-old passenger in the Malibu did wear a seat belt and was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries as a result of the crash.

An offense report was generated for intoxication assault because the passenger was injured as a result of the crash and Corpus Christi Police collected evidence that this was an alcohol related event. Intoxication Assault is a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Man Arrested For Assault At Anti-Bully Rally

A 38-year-old male was arrested Wednesday evening for assault at a rally against bullying.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call for a large fight at the 2600 block of Waldron Road while a rally against bullies was held in front of a school. Several people complained to police that they were hit by 38-year-old Tommy Martin (2/7/1974). None of the victims were transported to the hospital for thier injuries. The victims had minor injuries and Martin was arrested for assault and public intoxication.

A witness told police an object was thrown from the crowd to hit Martins vehicle. The witness told police that Martin exited the car and attacked the people in the crowd that he (Martin) believed threw the object.

The assault charge placed against Martin is a Class A misdemeanor which is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine for each count of the offense. There were four victims that claimed minor injuries as a result of Martins action. The Public Intoxication charge against Martin is a Class C misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine up to a $500.
