Police Nab Robber

Police responded to the Stripes store located at 1303 3rd St. for a theft of beer. When they arrived witnesses tell police that he saw Herman Grey  (3-21-1972) steal  two beers from the Stripes store.

He then followed Grey to see where he was going, that is when Grey pulled out a small silver handgun and took the witnesses backpack.

When police arrived they viewed the surveillance video in the store and put out a police B.O.L.O. for the suspect.

Grey was located in the area of six points and brought back to the Stripes store were both the clerk and witness identified him as the individual who stole the beer and the backpack at gun point.

Grey was arrested and charged with Aggravated Robbery.

Police responded to the H.E.B. reference a theft of a briefcase. When they arrived the victim told officer that he had already placed his items on the conveyor belt and was waiting to pay. That is when he turned to talk to the customer behind him in line. When he turned back he noticed that his briefcase was missing.

The victim then contacted the store security and upon checking the store surveillance and they observe the suspect exiting the store with the briefcase.

The suspect is described as Hispanic female in her thirties, she is about 5′ 5″ to 5′ 7″ in height, she weights 140 – 150 lbs. at the
time of the theft she was wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes and she was carrying a tan purse.

Bail Out Unsuccessful as Driver Quickly Apprehended

Officers set up surveillance on a maroon 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck being driven without the owner’s permission.   The truck pulled out from the Stripes Convenience Store at 4849 Leopard St. and began to head west bound on Leopard.

The Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver refused to pull over swerving into oncoming traffic lanes as he attempted to flee from Officers.

Officers report the driver was looking for a location to bail out of the vehicle.  The driver swerved into a drainage ditch and bailed out.  The truck traveled on striking the Diesel Engine and Injection building located at 5558 Leopard Street.

The driver Matthew Lee McCabe (08/07/63) was apprehended and arrested.  He was found to not be eligible for a driver’s license renewal.  McCabe was charged with Driving While License Suspended/Invalid, Evading Arrest/Detention with a Vehicle, and Felony Criminal Mischief.

Neither the driver nor anyone in the building was injured.  The damage was estimated in excess of $1,500.

Speed Violations Leads to Arrest

Officers pulled over a  white 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage for a traffic violation at Leopard and Omaha. The driver was found not to have a valid driver’s license.  Libby Cruz, a passenger in the vehicle was found in possession of a rock of cocaine.

Cruz (05/20/76) was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. 

The vehicle was impounded as the 27-year-old driver did not have a valid license  and unable to provide proof of insurance.  He was cited for speeding, No Driver’s License, and Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility.

Mall Security Nabs Auto Burglars

Officers responded to La Palmera Mall for an auto burglary in progress.  Mall security working the parking lot recognized the auto burglar and followed the Hispanic male and his partner in anticipation of the suspects committing a crime.

Unsurprisingly, Juan Angel Gonzalez (09/19/90) and Oscar Gonzalez (10/19/91) burglarized a blue 2001 Ford Excursion.  Mall security detained both suspects until Officers arrived.  Both suspects were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Vehicle. 

Juan Angel Gonzalez was additionally charged with Possession of Marijuana when a baggie of Marijuana was found on his person.

Sting Uncovers Prostitution Ring

Corpus Christi Police Department Vice and Narcotics Officers received complaints of a prostitution ring which was operating out of a local downtown hotel.  Further investigation revealed the prostitution ring consisted of three females and two males from the Amarillo, TX area.

An undercover sting resulted in the arrest of Lisa McLean (01/04/85) and Sharmra Johnson (12/15/88) at 510 N. Chaparral St.  Both women were charged with Prostitution.  Their arrests led to the remaining members of the prostitution ring being booted out of the hotel.

 

Arson Suspects Arrested

MetroCom dispatch received a call for suspicious persons outside of an apartment at Treyway Terrace Apartments. Witnesses stated that four individuals were outside of the apartments and had started a fire near one of the apartments.

The first Officer arriving saw a vehicle matching the description that was called in leaving the area. He then saw that there was smoke and a fire near one of the apartments. He, along with neighbors, were able to extinguish the fire with water hoses. The Officer attempted to make contact with the apartment occupants but found no one home. Several more witnesses then spoke to the Officers and gave descriptions of those responsible for the fire.

Officers, who were making their way to the apartment complex, were able to see the suspect vehicle leaving and made a traffic stop on it. The four individuals inside of the vehicle, Abel Castaneda Jr (7.9.1992), Michael Franco (7.11.1993) Daniel Garza (12.8.1992) and Jorge Perez (4.26.1993) were taken back to the location of the fire. There, witnesses identified them as being the ones who started the fire. All four were arrested for Arson.

Musicians Heavy Metal Christian Music Quieted by Thieves

Officers contacted Blak Fate band members who reported their U-Haul trailer loaded with their musical instruments was stolen from the Red Roof Inn early Sunday morning between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.  The San Antonio based band was in town for a charity performance.

On October 17th, at 3:29 a.m. Officers recovered the stolen U-Haul trailer behind the KFTX 97.5 FM parking lot.  The U-Haul had been emptied of all the musical equipment.

Loose Ammunition Leads to Discovery of Stolen Firearm

An Officer pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation and contacted the driver Tomas Ortiz (03/22/86).  Further investigation revealed Ortiz was in possession of ammunition and a rifle.  Officers found the rifle to be stolen out of Port Arthur.  The two passengers were released, but Ortiz was arrested for Theft of a Firearm.  His black 2007 Mazda was impounded.

Wanted Fugitive

Jose Ortega

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Jose Luis Ortega (9-30-1971). He is wanted on two counts of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Charges stem from an Aggravated Sexual Assault in February of 1990, in which he was convicted.

Ortega has been on the run for over a year.
