Town Hall Meetings Regarding Property Code

Since March of 2014, the Corpus Christi Police Department and Code Enforcement have looked for effective ways to address the blighted conditions in Corpus Christi. In reviewing the city’s current Southern Standards Property Code, it was found that Code Enforcement was currently operating under an outdated 1973 edition. In an attempt to bring the Corpus Christi Code Enforcement into current standards, we are working to adopt the International Property Maintenance Code (CCPMC), which incorporates “Best Practices” codes from around the nation.  While the CCPMC only has few new codes created within its text, the purpose of the CCPMC is to create a clear and concise set of codes, while eliminating the ambiguous wording which currently exists in the Southern Standards Code. In addition, the CCPMC will better work in conjunction with the already existing Unified Development Code and Unified Fire Code. The proposed CCPM has been placed on the Code Enforcement’s website for review. This site can be visited by logging into the City of Corpus Christi’s webpage at http://www.cctexas.com/ and select the city department tab to navigate to the Code Enforcement webpage. The Police Department will be hosting two town hall meetings to allow for comment on the proposed CCPMC.  Listed below are the dates, times, and locations:

  1. May 5, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.  – City Hall on the 6thfloor
  2. May 6, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. –  Lindale Senior Center, 3135 Swantner

It is our belief that a clear and concise property maintenance code will not only reduce community blight, but can also work to reduce crime by removing blighted conditions that attract crime.

If you are unable to make the meetings, we will have them available for viewing on our Corpus Christi Police Department YouTube page. We will also stream the event live on our new Periscope account. You can view it by following @CorpusChristiPD on Periscope.

Vector Control Begins Plan To Reduce Mosquitoes

Corpus Christi Vector Control will begin spraying for mosquitos tonight and will continue through the week until the entire community is sprayed. Vector Control will start in the Six Points area tonight and working out from there. We ask for everyone’s’ patience while Vector Control works through the city.

Vector Control can only spray for mosquitoes when it is not raining and the wind speed is low. The pesticide dissipates very quickly when it comes in contact with the ground, especially if there is any dew.  Even then, the fogger only kills the mosquitoes that are actually airborne and come in direct contact with the pesticide at the time of the spraying, so it is not effective for any great period of time. Since the fog only kills the airborne mosquitoes, spraying only occurs during evening hours, usually between 7:00 p.m. and Midnight. It is estimated the fog only kills one third of the total mosquito population.

Although Vector Control employees do their best to reduce the number of pest mosquitoes citywide, Corpus Christi Animal Care Services (CCACS) urges residents to take these personal precautions to avoid being bitten:

  • Use an approved insect repellent every time you go outside and follow the instructions on the label. Approved repellents are those that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Regularly drain standing water, including water that collects in empty cans, tires, bird feeders, buckets, clogged rain gutters and saucers under potted plants. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Purchase mosquito donuts (dunks) at retail stores that kill mosquito larvae in standing water.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use air conditioning or make sure there are screens on all doors and windows to keep mosquitoes from entering the home.
  • Keep grass cut and yards maintained. Treat the yard for mosquitoes, fleas, and pests.

Police Offer Safety Tips To Reduce Risk of Violent Crimes

The Corpus Christi Police received several reports of violent crimes Sunday night and have the following suggestions for the public to reduce their risk. These are general safety tips which may reduce your risk of becoming a victim of a violent attack.

  • Be alert and aware. Pay attention to who is around you and avoid distractions.
  • Travel well-lighted, busy routes and avoid shadowed areas.
  • Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door, and remember to be alert to what and who is around you.
  • Be alert when using, or simply carrying, your cellular phone, especially after dark. There is a market for stolen smart phones. If you do not need to use the phone, keep it secured and out of sight.
  • Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.
  • It’s best practice to travel with others.

Your safety is most important. If you are the victim of a crime, report it immediately. Also be aware of crime in the areas you frequent. The public may search the site, Crimereports.com for current information about all the criminal activity reported to the Corpus Christi Police Department. Below are three violent episodes in which the public should be aware because of the similar nature of the crime, and the similarity in suspect descriptions. The suspects in these cases remain at large and the Corpus Christi Police work as an equal partner with the community to solve these crimes.

Corpus Christi Parking Control Hosts Their First Industry Convention

Tuesday, April 21st through Thursday April 23rd the Texas Parking & Transportation Association (TPTA) held their annual Conference & Trade Show at American Bank Center for the first time in Corpus Christi. The parking industry is a $46+ billion industry in the United States. The TPTA expects 200-250 people who represent parking programs throughout the state from municipalities, universities, medical centers, airports, private parking entities and the vendors who support them.

Corpus Christi Police Parking Control Operations Manager, Marc Denson, has served on the Board of Directors of the TPTA organization the past 3 years and worked diligently to bring the event to Corpus Christi. “With the encouragement of CCPD Police Chief Floyd Simpson and tremendous support from the Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau and the American Bank Center we have been able to land this event,” said Denson.

This is the first time in many years that the TPTA has attempted to host their annual conference in a mid-size city, typically holding it in Austin, Houston or the Dallas areas. “Our goal was not only to bring the conference here, but to get it on a regular rotation to keep bringing revenue into our city as well as introducing people to Corpus Christi who have never been here.” said Denson “We want them to bring their families back this summer.”

The Texas Parking & Transportation Association is the nation’s 3rd largest state parking organization behind California and Florida in membership. As cities expand and revitalize downtown parking has been deemed a valuable asset to cities, with industry professionals often stating ‘parking is everything’. “With most cities land locked downtown and the number of commuter vehicles increasing annually, cities have to become creative to facilitate parking needs for growth. This is not just limited to cities though, as we find the same situations in universities, medical centers and airports. The TPTA and its members exist to help provide solutions!” said Denson.
