Traffic Closed on Ventura Lane for Two Hours This Afternoon

Date: Wednesday, December 30, 2015, 15:00
Location: 5600 Ventura Lane
Event: Welfare Concern
Case Number: 1512300083

The 5600 block of Ventura Lane was closed to traffic for two hours this afternoon while Police attempted to investigate a welfare concern with a man who locked himself in his home and refused to communicate effectively with Police.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call for a welfare concern at a home on the 5600 block of Ventura Lane at 3pm today in which the caller provided information that a person may be held inside involuntarily. Officers were met at the door to the home by a man who saw the Officers, then told the Officers to leave, and the man went inside his home and locked the door. The Officers attempted to communicate with the man, but the man refused. At about 4pm, the Officers summoned additional resources to help communicate with the man because information was learned that there were multiple people inside the home, and the Officers wanted to insure that no aid was needed. The Hostage Negotiation Team and the SWAT team responded to attempt to communicate with the people inside the home. The traffic was closed to the public a little after 4pm as a precaution. No homes were evacuated because there was no threat to the public, but residents were asked to remain inside.

A 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy exited the house at about 5pm and Officers spoke to the boys to make sure they were not injured and there was no crime committed. A 20-year-old man exited the home at about 5:20pm and Officers spoke to the 20-year-old again to determine if there was any injured person or if any crime had been committed. Officers believed there was no threat of violence to any person, and there was no crime committed which merited immediate Police action, all people involved had been contacted and there were no injuries, so Officers found family members to care for the two boys, and then left the area. The man never established an effective dialogue with Officers. Officers were provided information that there may be an administrative violation of law which will continue to be researched for validity.

Phlebotomist On Duty During Holidays

The Christmas and New Years Day holidays often lead to an increase in the number of Driving While Intoxicated arrests made by the Corpus Christi Police Department. We want everyone to enjoy this holiday season. We ask that you act responsibly by not drinking and driving in our city. All drivers should avoid the risk of arrest, incarceration or tragedy that is associated with driving while intoxicated.

In an effort to assist law enforcement agencies in the investigation of suspected intoxicated drivers, the Nueces County District Attorney’s Office will provide a trained phlebotomist at the City of Corpus Christi Detention Center from 10 PM to 4 AM on Friday and Saturday, December 25 and 26 during Christmas.

Next week during New Year’s Eve and Day, the phlebotomist will be on duty on Thursday, Friday and Saturday,  December 31, January 1 and 2nd from 10 PM until 4 AM.

The Corpus Christi Police Department remains a “no refusal” agency all of the time. However during this holiday period, when a trained phlebotomist is at the CDC, our officers will not have to take suspects to the hospital in order to get a blood sample. This will make the DWI investigation more efficient and will get our officers back on the street much quicker.
