Babysitter Thwarts Auto Burglary

Police were called to the Montego Bay Apartments for a burglary in progress in which the babysitter observed a man burglarizing the victim’s green Mazda Protege.  The victim rushed out and confronted the auto burglar who ran towards the Paradise Bay Apartments.

Officers searching through the Paradise Bay apartment complex found Arturo Navarro (01/18/88) who was arrested when he was positively identified by the victim.  Navarro was charged with Burglary of a Vehicle, a Class “A” Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Officers Team Effort Lands Duo in Jail

The owner of Boots ‘N Britches Western Wear reported the theft of $1,380 worth of silver jewelry by a couple who fled in a black Cadillac CTS.  A B.O.L.O. (Be On the Look Out) was issued for both the couple and vehicle.  Officers at the western wear store reviewed surveillance video of the theft and observed a woman taking several pieces of jewelry and putting them in her purse.  Her male accomplice was seen acting as the lookout.

An Officer viewing the surveillance video recognized Belinda A. Beltran (09/05/80) and her boyfriend Michael R. Ramirez (04/14/79), while another Officer provided their home address.  Officers searching for the couple found them leaving a local convenience store in the 2000 block of Morgan.

The Cadillac was pulled over at 18th and Craig Streets and the couple was arrested. Beltran was found to have prior convictions for theft and her charge of Theft~Shoplifting was enhanced to a State Jail Felony.  Ramirez was charged with Theft~Shoplifting, a Class “A” Misdemeanor.  The jewelry was returned to Boots ‘N Britches.

The C.C.P.D.’s commitment to “Keep Corpus Christi Safe” has continued with its “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative”

On Saturday, October 6, 2012, a total of 77 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will be auctioned at the Corpus Christi Police Department’s  Vehicle Impound Lot located at 5485 Greenwood Drive during our monthly auction. The site has four paved acres for an auction lot.

Approximately 14 of these vehicles are “No Insurance” impounds. On Friday, October 5, 2012, the general public will be allowed to register and view the vehicles to be auctioned from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no registration fee.

On the day of the auction, the general public can continue to register and view the vehicles from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The auction will commence promptly at 10:00 a.m.   The vehicles to be auctioned can be viewed at www.siskauction.com. An auction list may also be downloaded from the same website.

The department’s strong stand and enforcement of this “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative” will continue and all vehicles involved in accidents will be impounded and the driver cited if they are unable to provide financial proof of insurance. Driver’s license and proof of financial responsibility checkpoints will continue to be conducted at the Shift Captains’ authorization.

Officers issued 5,509 citations and impounded 1,212 vehicles for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility during 2011.  During September  of 2012, Officers issued 345 citations for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility and impounded 73 vehicles for the same charge.

Motorcycle Officer Helps Apprehend Thief on his Morning Ride to Work

An Officer’s shift began earlier than expected as he rode to work early this morning when he heard a B.O.L.O. (Be On the Look Out) for a silver Chevrolet Impala involved in theft at the Wal-Mart, 4109 S. Staples Street.    The Officer observed the Impala at the Weber Road on ramp to SH 286.  The Officer advised dispatch and followed the vehicle until back-up Officers were able to assist him.

The Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over at SH 286 and Horne Road, but the driver refused to stop and continued on, exiting on Agnes Street.  The driver slowed down allowing the passenger to bail out on 14th Street.

William Sanchez (09/12/56) finally stopped at Morris and 15th Streets where he was arrested.  Sanchez was charged with Theft and Evading Arrest in a Vehicle.  Officers recovered $383 in stolen power tools and returned them to Wal-Mart.

$5,000 Reward Offered for Escaped Civil Commitment Sex Offender

 

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has added James Anthony Rubio, 55, to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender list, and a $5,000 cash reward is now offered for information leading to his capture. In April 2012, Rubio was discharged from prison after serving a 20-year sentence. Sunday night just after 11:30 p.m., he cut off his ankle monitor and fled from the Travis County Residential Center in Del Valle, Texas. Texas Crime Stoppers tips are guaranteed to be anonymous.

Rubio, now wanted for felony Failure to Comply with Civil Commitment Requirements, is a sexually violent predator with previous military training and experience. Anybody encountering him should use extreme caution.He has relatives and friends living in San Antonio, but he may be headed to Mexico. 

Rubio has served time in prison for sexually assaulting four different women, three of whom were in their 20s, while the fourth was 14 years old. During these offenses, Rubio threatened to kill his victims and/or their loved ones, punched the victims, and/or used scissors or other objects to prevent their escape.

Rubio can speak Spanish, earned an auto mechanics certificate from a vocational college, and served four years in the military.

Rubio is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 186 pounds.  His tattoos include a rose/baby doll, skull, star, and cobra on his right arm; Marine Corps symbol and eagle/”JR” on his left arm; cowgirl, roses, unicorn, and spurs on his chest; and Mardi Gras masks on right shoulder.  For more information, please view his wanted poster at: http://www.dps.texas.gov/Texas10MostWanted/SexOffenderDetails.aspx?id=168.

Witnesses Call Police, Foil Burglary

Officers were called to investigate a burglary in progress at the residence.  The witnesses observed a man and woman on bicycles in the garage of the home.  Officers searched for the couple and found Angelo Coglaiti (07/15/79) and Lori Vandusen (11/12/85) in the area of Gaines near Airline.

Coglaiti had a golf bag strapped to the back of his bicycle with a pressure washer inside, while Vandusen was found to be in possession of a stolen checkbook.  Both claimed to have found the items by the roadway.

Further investigation revealed the duo burglarized the Gaines Street residence and hid the pressure washer in the bushes adjoining the apartment complex.  They returned for the stolen property and rode their bicycles to the 400 block of Ashland where they burglarized a minivan, taking the check book.

Both Coglaiti and Vandusen were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Habitation and Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.  Lt. T. Nichols mentioned the apprehension of Coglaiti and Vandusen were “Super arrests which ended a burglary string before it really got started.”

The Police Department would like to remind everyone to close their garage doors and lock their vehicles.  Think like a thief and look for ways to secure both your home and vehicles, making them less accessible to burglars.

Suspects Sought in Home Invasion

Officers contacted the couple who reported they were inside the apartment when they heard loud banging and kicking on the front door just prior to somebody punching through the bedroom window.  They told Officers two men climbed in and began assaulting the man.  One of the assailants was armed with “brass knuckles” and the man was punched several times in the head and upper body.  The woman was also hit when she tried to intervene and stop the assault.

Both the men fled out the front door.  The woman told Officers one of the men was a man she dated during a break in her current relationship.  The victims were unable to identify the second suspect who was described as a Hispanic male, 18 to 22 years of age, 6’ to 6’2” feet tall and weighing 300 to 320 lbs.

Man Charged with Dragging Wrecker Driver

A 47-year-old wrecker driver was dragged and stomped on by Travis Lawrence Young (10/03/81) who stopped by Lone Star Wrecker Service to retrieve his “stolen” Chrysler 300.  The wrecker service had impounded the vehicle from a  local apartment complex.

Young walked into the wrecker yard and started his car, refusing to follow their release procedures.  The victim was approaching the open driver’s side door when Young began to reverse his vehicle and “hooked” the wrecker driver, dragging him.  He was then kicked and hit by Young who then attempted to drive off.  Young  was blocked in by a wrecker driven by another employee.

The victim who had a shoe print on his shirt where he was kicked by Young told Officers he would seek medical care on his own for the pain to his legs and ribs.

Young was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  He was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Drive By Investigation Nets Three Arrests

Patrol and Gang Officers were called to the area of 1400 16th Street for a drive by involving two to three vehicles possibly shooting at one another.   Several vehicle descriptions were given and an Officer responding to the area observed a vehicle driving away from the area with its headlights turned off.  The silver Chrysler Sebring was observed to be driving erratically and at high rate of speed as the Officer attempted to catch up to it.  The Officer reported an object was thrown out from the vehicle by the backseat passenger in the area of Keys and Elizabeth Streets, shortly before the Sebring stopped at 2800 Juanita.

During the traffic stop, Officers contacted three males occupants who were subsequently arrested.  The driver Camilo Gonzalez (11/13/91) was charged with Reckless Driving and Possession of Controlled Substance when a packet of Methamphetamine was found near him.  Ronnie Rey Rodriguez (05/04/92) who was seated next to the Gonzalez was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Dangerous Drug when a pill bottle containing Heroin and Methamphetamine was found where he’d been seated.  Richard Lee Cuellar (12/02/90) who was seated in the back passenger area was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.  Officers found his Texas Department of Correction identification on him along with several bullets.  The object thrown out of the Sebring by Cuellar turned out to be a handgun which was found by Gang Unit Officers.

Vandals Use Baseball Bat to Damage Vehicle’s Mirrors

Officers were called to the 3500 block of Washam Drive for several vehicles which had been damaged.  A homeowner told Police he was inside his home when he heard a loud noise.  He rushed outside and observed a dark-colored Ford Ranger driving away at a high rate of speed.  The truck was occupied by three young males.

The homeowner called 911 and was able to obtain a license number for the vehicle.  Officers checked the neighborhood and found six vehicles with smashed mirrors.  Police  were able to track down the Ford Ranger and impounded it.  The investigation is still ongoing and Officers believe there might be more vehicles vandalized.  If you live in the area and have found your vehicle vandalized, please contact the Police Department at 361-886-2600 and report the vandalism with the Telephone Reporting Unit.  You can also file a report online at www.ccpolice.com.
