The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to 779 calls for service and generated 189 reports for formal criminal complaints from 7:00 a.m. November 8 to 7:00 a.m. on November 9, 2015. These are samples of the criminal complaints filed by the Corpus Christi Police for that time period.

Corpus Christi Police responded to the 4500 block of Prescott Street for a shooting.

A 32 year old male victim told Officers that he was crossing the street on foot, with a 27 year old male friend, when a newer model black Chevrolet Impala slowed down and drove past them. The driver, described as a light skinned Hispanic male, produced a hand gun out the window, and fired three shots at the two men.

One of the shots struck the older male in the lower left leg. He was taken to Spohn Memorial Medical Center by CCFD EMS with non-life threatening injuries.   The other man was not injured.

The vehicle that the suspect was driving was last seen going south on Prescott Street.

Officers recovered three shell casings in the middle of the street.

No suspects have been identified in this case, and Officers continue to investigate.

A store employee at the Bealls, located at the Five Points Shopping Center, called Corpus Christi Police after he observed a man steal nearly $800 worth of merchandise.

Officers arrived and were told by the employee that he observed a Hispanic male grab about 20 sweaters and run out the front door of the store without paying.  The employee said he ran after the suspect, but was pushed into a parked car by the man.

The suspect dropped the merchandise and jumped into a waiting vehicle It was described as a grey 2004 Nissan Sentra with three other males inside.

At this time, no suspects have been identified in this case.

First Friday Fun Fact

The Corpus Christi Police Department has a campaign called “First Friday Fun Fact” that will focus on different Texas traffic laws.  It will run on the first Friday of each month. Here is this month’s traffic fact.

§547.302 – DUTY TO DISPLAY LIGHTS

(a) A vehicle shall display each lighted lamp and illuminating device required by this chapter to be on the vehicle:

(1) at nighttime; and

(2) when light is insufficient or atmospheric conditions are unfavorable so that a person or vehicle on the highway is not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.

Often you see people driving around in the dark or in bad weather with just their parking lights on.  There’s a reason they’re called parking lights.  The law requires you to use all your lights (including headlights) at nighttime, which is defined as being one half hour after sunset to one half hour before sunrise, as well as anytime when you cannot see clearly for 1,000 feet, which essentially covers all inclement weather as well as dusk and dawn.  Therefore, you should never be driving with just your parking lights on.  If you’re in a situation where you need to have any lights on at all, then you must use your headlights.

Some people will say that they don’t want to use their headlights during bad weather or at dusk because there’s enough ambient light for them to see and their headlights won’t be illuminating anything.  However, headlights are not only for lighting-up the road ahead, but they also make you more visible to other drivers.  So whenever visibility is reduced, you should use your headlights, if not to help you see but to help others see you.

Officers Return To Duty

The two Corpus Christi Police Officers will returned to duty on  Friday, November 6  after an officer involved shooting at a home located in the 6300 block of St. Denis Street on October 30.

Senior Officer Chance Durbin, a five year veteran of the department,  and Officer Donna Gilliam, a recent graduate of the last police academy on October 9th    have been cleared to return back to work.

The suspect, who pointed a gun at both Officers, Marcus Escobar (04/26/1994), has been charged with two counts of attempted capital murder.

Offense: Aggravated Robbery
P.C. 29.03     First Degree Felony
Case Number: 1511050014
A 47 year old man called Corpus Christi Police after he was stabbed in the leg and robbed of his wallet in the 1400 block of Paige Place.

Officers arrived and found the victim had a stab wound on the right upper thigh. He told Officers that two males approached him and demanded his wallet and then stabbed him. The victim was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS to be treated.

The victim described the suspects as being two Hispanic males wearing black shirts, between 25 and 30 years old.

At this time, the suspects have not been identified.

Public Notice Of On-site Inspection with Location Correction

The Corpus Christi Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 6:00 P.M. The session will be conducted in the 6th Floor Conference Room located in City Hall at 1201 Leopard Street.

Agency employees and the public are also invited to offer comments by calling 361-886-2792 on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M. Comments will be taken by the assessment team.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 5 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. Local contact is Lieutenant Maria Huerta-Garcia at 361-826-2977.

Protect Your Firearms

The Corpus Christi Police Department wants to inform citizens about auto burglaries occurring in the city and victims having their firearms stolen from inside their vehicle.

From January through the end of October of 2015, the police department has investigated 151 reports of burglaries that involved a firearm being stolen from inside of the vehicle.  Only 35 of those stolen guns have been recovered.

The Corpus Christi Police Department respects the right to own and carry a gun,  but we want to warn citizens that these types of crimes are occurring in our city and remind them to  protect their firearms and keep them out of the hands of criminals.

Location: 5000 Weber Road
Offense: Fatal Crash
Case Number: 1511040012
A 23 year old man was killed in a traffic crash after he lost control of his vehicle and struck the a concrete pillar under State Highway 358 near the Weber Road intersection.

Police Traffic Investigators responded and determined that a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by the man, was exiting the freeway at a high rate of speed, lost control and struck the pillar.

Police are still investigating this crash but believe alcohol and speed were a factor.

City Hosts Auction To Sell 120 Vehicles Saturday

The city of Corpus Christi will auction 120 cars, trucks, and motorcycles at the  Police Vehicle Impound Lot, located at 5485 Greenwood Drive, on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 10:00am.

The general public is encouraged to register and view the vehicles for auction from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Friday, November 6 or November 7 from 8am until the start of the auction. No one under 17 years of age will be allowed in the impound lot or auction lot areas. Only registered bidders with a current bidder number will be allowed in the auction sale area on Saturday. 

Twelve of the vehicles for sale were impounded for no insurance.

The vehicles for auction may be viewed online and an auction list may be downloaded from www.siskauction.com.

Two males and a female walked into the Sun Loans, located at 2222 Airline Road, wearing masks and hoodies and armed with a gun.

The three suspects forced all the employees and two customers in the business to the ground.  One of the male suspects pulled out a handgun and the three proceeded behind the desk area of the business.  One of the workers then attempted to call police from a desk phone, but the male armed with the gun forced her to drop it. Another female employee was thrown to the ground by one of the male suspects when she did not get down.

The suspects fled before taking anything from the business. They were last seen running towards the Saw Grass Apartments.

Officers believe they know the three suspects involved, however, none of them have been located.
