Man Breaks Into Home On Whitewing Drive Then Injures People Inside

Corpus Christi Police are investigating a burglary case in which a 34-year-old man is accused of breaking into a home on the 6700 block of Whitewing Drive Saturday morning and exchanging gunfire with the people inside the home.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a complaint of gunshots from inside a home on the 6700 block of Whitewing Drive at 1:30am Saturday morning. Responding Officers saw a 34-year-old man outside the home with apparent injuries and a firearm when the Officers arrived. Officers confronted the 34-year-old man and disarmed him. The 34-year-old man got into a vehicle and left the scene and Officers followed the 34-year-old man. The 34-year-old man was stopped at the 7000 block of Ayers and Officers apprehended the 34-year-old man and took him to the hospital for treatment of what the Officers believe are gunshot wounds.

The Officers who remained at the scene on Whitewing went to the house and learned that an injured 36-year-old woman was inside the home with her 20-year-old son. The Officers were told that the 36-year-old woman is not a resident of the home, and that the 34-year-old man had a romantic relationship with the 36 woman and the relationship has dissolved. Officers were told that the 34-year-old man forced entry into the home, confronted the 36-year-old woman, and injured her with a firearm and was stopped by the 20-year-old man who used a firearm to repel the attack from the 34-year-old man. Officers were told the 34-year-old man left the home and were then confronted by Corpus Christi Police. The 36-year-old woman was transported to the hospital by ambulance for injuries the Officers believe were caused by gunshots.

No Officers discharged their firearms and no other injuries were reported. The 34-year-old man and the 36 year old woman remained hospitalized at the time of this report and their conditions are not known as they continue to receive medical treatment. Officers believe there are no outstanding suspects related to this case.

Corpus Christi Police Detectives and the Forensics Services Technicians arrived at the scene to gather evidence and information. The 34-year-old man is accused of Burglary of a Habitation, a second degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine, but other criminal accusations are expected to be applied to the 34-year-old man. The 20-year-old man was not physically injured and has no criminal accusations made against him.

Corpus Christi Police Detectives would like to have complete information related to this case and urge anyone with any information about this case to call 886-2600 and provide the information to Detectives in reference to this case number.

The Corpus Christi Police have Crime Victim’s Advocates and encourage anyone in Corpus Christi in a potentially violent relationship to reach out to Police and community resources for early intervention.

The Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers would like help from the public to locate 27-year-old Oliverio Ramirez (8/24/1987) who is wanted for an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Ramirez is described as a bald 27-year-old male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, about 185 pounds with a scar on his left eye, a tattoo of the word “Ramirez” on his back, and a tattoo of a portrait of his son on the back of his left arm. The last known address for Ramirez was on the 4900 block of Blundell Drive in Corpus Christi.

Drop Off Unused Prescription Meds Tomorrow: D.E.A.’S National Prescription Take-Back Day Is Saturday

After collecting and destroying 5.5 million pounds—2,762 tons—of unused prescription drugs in the past 5 years, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is continuing its efforts to take back unused, unwanted and expired prescription medications.  The DEA invites the public to bring their potentially dangerous, unwanted medicines to one of over 5,000 collection sites around the country that are manned by more than 3,800 of DEA’s tribal and local law enforcement partners.  This service is free of charge, with no questions asked.

The public can find a nearby collection site by visiting www.dea.gov, clicking on the “Got Drugs?” icon, and entering their zip code into the search window, or they can call 800-882-9539.  Only pills and other solids, like patches, will be accepted—the public should not bring liquids, needles or other sharps to take back sites.

America is presently experiencing an epidemic of addiction, overdose and death due to abuse of prescription drugs, particularly opioid painkillers.  6.5 million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than abuse cocaine, heroin, and hallucinogens combined.

“Most prescription drug abusers get their pills from friends and family, including from the household medicine cabinet,” said DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg.  “Please remove unwanted prescription drugs from your homes and help prevent substance abuse fueled by our medicine cabinets.”

Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States, eclipsing deaths from motor vehicle crashes or firearms.  The removal from homes of unwanted prescription pills that can be abused, stolen or resold is an easy way to help fight the epidemic of substance abuse and addiction.

Police Announce Buc Days Parade Guidelines

Those who attend the Buc Days Illuminated Parade scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 2016 should be aware of a few guidelines to make the event fun and safe for everyone. Follow the Corpus Christi Police Twitter feed at @CorpusChristiPD for updates and progress of the parade.

The Parade route will close to traffic at 5:00pm.

Paraders are allowed to occupy their spot along the parade route starting at 5pm Friday. The open container ordinance remains in effect throughout the night on April 29. Alcohol consumption is only allowed on Saturday, April 30, from 8pm-10pm.

No one is allowed to block the public rights of way or entrances to private property and no one is permitted to be on private property without the owners consent. If a portable toilet is rented, it may be placed on the city property along the parade route, but not block any sidewalk, public right of way, or others access to the parade route.

There are a few prohibited items along the parade route. The use of any air horns, any Fireworks, Silly String, and impact firecrackers are all prohibited, so the public is encouraged to leave those items at home. Those who attend the parade are encouraged to bring trash containers to collect and remove their garbage. Everyone that attends should also be mindful of the City Ordinance Section 23-63 for littering in prohibited places.

The parade is a family event and there will be children enjoying the parade. The Corpus Christi Police wants everyone to enjoy the parade and promote a safe environment for all who attend.

Several leaders in the Colombian National Police are visiting Corpus Christi through he International Visitor Leadership Program to see how Corpus Christi Police conduct business. The Single Country Project: Colombia Leadership Management and Standards in the Judicial and Law Enforcement Environment, seeks law enforcement agencies who excel in the law enforcement industry so that they may return to their agency and set best practices in place. Corpus Christi Police was chosen along with Baltimore, Md; Cincinnati, Oh; Sacramento, Ca; and Washington, D.C. for the leaders to visit. Corpus Christi was selected because of the reputation of the great community relationships we have locally. The leadership are focused to learn how we accomplished such great community relationships. The leaders are doing a ride-a-long tonight to see our Officers interaction with the community in hopes to learn how we earned such a reputation.Be sure to say, “Hola!” if you see any of the leaders around town! They will be here for about two more days.

Corpus Christi Police and area law enforcement agencies helped Mercedez Villarreal have a good birthday today through the Fraternal Order of Police’s Shop With A Cop program.

Mercedez Villarreal has suffered a life threatening medical condition and was referred for help to lift her spirits. The Fraternal Order Of Police arranged for local law enforcement agencies to take Mercedez on a shopping trip to Wal-Mart and then provide her lunch at Walbangers. Mercedez was escorted on her shopping trip by the Chief of the Corpus Christi Police, Mike Markle. Mercedez was outfitted with a tiara and sash by employees at Wal-Mart and the bakery provided the cake.

Thank you for all the wonderful individuals from area law enforcement agencies, and the employees of Wal-Mart and Walbangers for making this a special day for Mercedez.

Animal Care Services Asks Public For Help to Foster Healthy Animals

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services needs foster help to assist with housing healthy animals that are awaiting transport to other rescue facilities. The ASPCA Grant that we are blessed with is paying for the transport of the animals out of our facility to shelters around the country. The animals are required to be out of our facility for a minimum of 10 days to ensure non-exposure to disease. That is where the “fosters” are so important. Anyone interested should contact our live release team at 826-4601 or 826-4606.

City Announces Buc Days Traffic Plan Which Starts Today

Buccaneer Day Festival and Carnival Traffic Plan

The City of Corpus Christi Traffic Engineering office advises residents beginning on Wednesday, April 20 through Sunday, May 1, 2016, the following traffic control plan will be implemented for the Buccaneer Day Festival and Carnival events:

  • Southbound Shoreline Boulevard will be reduced to one lane of traffic between William Street and Park Avenue.
  • Northbound Shoreline Boulevard will be reduced to one lane of traffic between Buford Street and Coopers Alley.
  • Born Street and Broadway Court will be closed to traffic at the Shoreline Boulevard intersection.
  • Park Avenue which will be closed to traffic on the east side of Shoreline Boulevard.
  • No Parking areas will be clearly marked along Born Street, Broadway Street, and Kinney Street.
  • Motorists are asked to use Water Street as their primary route to the Buc Days Parking area.

Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the work site.  Motorists should expect delays and if possible, seek alternate routes or avoid the area. Access to local driveways will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.

Police Remember Officer Roy N. Smith

On April 20, 1953, Patrol Officer Roy Newton Smith was responding to a fight call when his patrol car was struck by another car at Staples and Lipan. Smith died of his injuries that day. Smith was 21 years old and had been on the department for just 4 months at the time of this tragic accident. Roy was married to Laverne Smith and had come here from Wichita Falls, Texas to work at the department. Roy and Laverne had one daughter Gail. Roy served with distinction in the Army having served in the Korean conflict before joining the department. Please take a moment out of your day to remember our fallen brother. Our prayers remain with him and his family and may we never forget him and his sacrifice. Roy Smith is the fourth officer to die in the Line of Duty for the Department.

As a side note, we were able to locate his only daughter Gail Michalsky of Spring, Texas who never had a chance to know her father and she attended her first Police Officers Memorial Service last year. She was given a copy of the Wall of Honor photo by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.

Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers has a cash reward for the first person to call Crime Stoppers to lead law enforcement to capture 33-year-old Magdaleno Devega. Devega is a fugitive from Nueces County who is wanted for failing to appear to court for several accusations of Sexual Assault of a Child.

Devega is described as a 33-year-old man who is 5 feet 4 inches tall, 160 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, olive color skin, with a tattoo of a lady on his left arm. Devega has also used the alias Juan Jose Gonzalez.
